Electric Vehicle Grants in Ireland Update

The electric car industry is exciting and dynamic but it is challenging to keep up with all the latest developments. Here at WattCharger, we'll continue to do our best to keep Irish consumers informed.

Today, we'd like to share some positive legislative news with a short round-up of the battery electric vehicle (BEV) grants available to Irish drivers.

Last December, we shared an educational post on applying for the original EV home grant. Since then, The Irish Minister for Transport, Eamon Ryan, announced several new grant initiatives.

BEV Grant Scheme Expansion

Last July, Ryan revealed that a new office called Zero Emissions Vehicles Ireland would be opening to further develop the EV infrastructure in Ireland and support the grant legislation. He went on to share that the existing EV home charger grant would be expanded to allow Irish consumers that do not own an EV yet to apply for the grant and install a home charging unit. This move relieves the pressure on buyers to purchase an EV before their home is EV-ready.

Note: This grant is available to all accommodations, both owned and rented but installation must be approved by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI).

The good news doesn't stop there! The Minister also announced that Irish Businesses will be afforded the opportunity to test an electric vehicle for a minimum of three months so they can assess the viability of adopting EVs for their businesses. 

In addition, the government has earmarked €15 million euros to roll out almost one hundred public charging points nationwide. The budget includes grants to provide local sports clubs with EV charging infrastructure to support the local communities throughout Ireland. 

Last but not least, The Zero Emissions Vehicles Ireland Office rolled out a motion to owners of small public service vehicles (SPSV) like taxis. SPSV owners can apply for a grant of up to €10,000 euros to support their transition to an electric vehicle. 

These incentives demonstrate that the Irish Government is committed to supporting Ireland's transition to the electric-first automobile industry. The Government has projected there will be 180,000 EVs on the roads by 2025 and close to 1 million by 2030.
