ESB to increase the cost of EV Charging Points by 52%

EV owners need to be aware that ESB has announced that there will be a sharp increase in the cost of public EV charge points. This is the second time this year the ESB has hiked up the prices of public charging stations.

The ESB, a state-owned electrical infrastructure body, operates 1,350 public charge points across Ireland. For Standard charging, which caters for smaller EV vehicles and batteries, the ESB  intend to increase the price per kWh from €0.33/kWh to €0.50/kWh as of December 20th, 2022. However, the cost of fast and high charging will also increase. Please see the ESB EV cost per kWh tables below for reference.

ESB Members

Charging Type Current €/kWh New €/kWh % Increase € Battery
Standard €0.33/kWh €0.50/kWh 52% Under 23kW
Fast €0.39/kWh €0.58/kWh 49% 23-50 kW
High €0.42/kWh €0.61/kWh 45% +50 kW

It is important to note that the membership fees will remain at €4.79 per month per member.

Non-ESB Members

Charging Type Current €/kWh New €/kWh % Increase € Battery
Standard €0.375/kWh €0.563/kWh 50% Under 23kW
Fast €0.432/kWh €0.647/kWh 50% 23-50 kW
High €0.461/kWh €0.682/kWh 48% +50 kW

Much like fuel consumption, the larger your EV vehicle and battery, the more expensive the cost of running it. EV drivers with larger EV batteries will feel ESB’s price hikes the most. For example, the Volkswagen ID.4, which has a 77 kW battery, will cost nearly €40 to charge in full. This is a 53% increase from €26.

WattCharger Recommendation

The price increases come as no surprise to the EV consultants here at WattCharger and we predict public charging providers will continue to arbitrarily increase their prices. For that reason, we encourage EV owners to forecast the annual cost of relying on public chargers versus installing a privately owned EV home charger. Please reach out to us if you’d like to discuss future proofing your EV charging needs with a home charger.
